The Birmingham
Veterans Affairs Medical Center (BVAMC) is an integral part of the Medical
community that provides ! acute, tertiary, medical, and surgical care to Veterans
of Alabama. The Medical Center provides care to a veteran population of 420,000
in Alabama and treats approximately 57,000 unique veterans annually. The medical
center serves as a referral center for this area with 138 operating beds with
care provided in almost all medical and surgical specialties and
subspecialties. Birmingham, AL is located in the heart of the Southeastern
United States and is a progressive center for medical research, banking, music,
technology, art, engineering, and higher education.

Work schedule: rotating shifts
The Post Anesthesia Recovery Registered Nurse provides individualized, goal directed nursing care to 12-22 patients each day through the use of assessments, planning, implementation, and evaluation from admission to discharge from the PACT. The RN uses modified aldrete scale to assist in the initial assessment and assess the level of sedation throughout the recovery period and at discharge ! from the PACU. The RN assimilates, interprets, and incorporates essential elements of the peroperative anesthesia report for patient care in the immediate post-operative period. The incumbent manages post-operative pain by titrating pain medication as ordered by the attending Anesthesiologist and evaluates the efficacy of titration. The post anesthesia recovery unit is a 6 bed unit facilitating care of patients from the operating room and ambulatory surgery facility. The PACU nurse is under the direct supervison of the Nurse Manager of the Operating Room/ PACU.

QUALIFICATIONS REQUIRED:
BASIC REQUIREMENTS:
·
U.S. citizenship. Non-citizens may
be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens in
accordance with VA Policy.

Full unrestricted Licensure,
Certification, or Registration required

·
Graduate of a school of professional
nursing approved by the appropriate State-accrediti! ng agency and
accredited by one of the following accrediting bodies! at the time the program
was completed by the applicant: The National League for Nursing Accrediting
Commission (NLNAC) or The Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education (CCNE). In
cases of graduates of foreign schools of professional nursing, possession of
current, full, active and unrestricted registration will meet the requirement
of graduation from an approved school of professional nursing. The completion
of coursework equivalent to a nursing degree in a MSN Bridge Program that
qualifies for professional nursing registration constitutes the completion of
an approved course of study of professional nursing. Students should submit the
certificate of professional nursing to sit for the NCLEX to the VA along with a
copy of the MSN transcript. (Reference VA Handbook 5005, Appendix G6)

Current, full, active, and
unrestricted registration as a graduate professional nurse in a State,
Territory or Commonweal! th (i.e., Puerto Rico) of the United States, or the
District of Columbia.

Preferred Experience:

  • One (1) year of recent Medical-Surgical or relatined clinical experience or experience as a student.

Professional nursing certification in are of practice (i.e. Medical-Surgical).

·
BSN

·
Current BLS AND ACLS certification.

·
Excellent interpersonal and
communication skills.

·
Demonstrated ability to assess and
prioritize multiple medical and surgical diagnoses.

·
Demonstrated excellent physical
assessment skills.

·
Demonstrated ability to be
dependable, self-directed, and flexible, including flexibility in assignment
and time scheduling.

·
Excellent customer service skills.

GRADE DETERMINATIONS:
Experience as a RN will be evaluated to determine if the experience is of an
acceptable level o! f quality with regard to the following four dimensions of
nursin! g: Practice, Professional Development, Collaboration and Scientific
Inquiry. Each dimension of practice has criteria that demonstrate essential
core competencies for VHA Nursing Personnel.

Nurse I, level
I-Associate Degree or diploma in nursing; no experience

Nurse I, level
2-Associate Degree or Diploma in Nursing, approx. 1 year experience OR Associate Degree in Nursing and a
Bachelors in a related field, no experience, OR BSN, no experience.

Nurse I, Level
3-Associate Degree or Diploma in Nursing, approx. 2-3 years experience OR Associates Degree or Diploma in
Nursing and Bachelors degree in a related field, approx. 1-2 years experience OR BSN, approx. 1-2 years experience OR MSN or related field with a BSN or
BachelorÂ's degree in related field, no experience.

Nurse II - A BSN with
approximately 2-3 years of experience, or ADN or Diploma in Nursing and a
bachelors degree in a related field an! d approximately 2-3 years experience or a
Master's degree in nursing or related field with a BSN and approximately 1-2
years experience, or a Doctoral degree in nursing or meets basic requirements
for appointment and has doctoral degree in a related field with no
experience.

Nurse III - Master's
degree in nursing or related field with BSN and approximately 2-3 years
experience or Doctoral degree in nursing or related field and approximately 2-3
years experience.

light carrying 15-44 lbs, walking and standing and standing for up to 8 hours,
use of rapid mental and muscular coordination simultaneously, ability to read
type written characters (glasses permitted), ability to hear the whispered
voice (hearing aid permitted), repeated bending for up to 8 hours, etc.
