LIMITED TO:
1. Maintains high standards of professional service in the Anesthesiology Service. This is d! one through personal supervision and consultation with members of the staff on matters of patient care, as well as constantly keeping abreast of and informing others of medical and surgical advances that are applicable in-patient care.
2. Assists in responsibility for the quality of anesthetic care at Providence Hospital. This includes routine and emergency consultation on problems of anesthetic technique and inhalation therapy. Assists in policy decisions on choice of techniques.
3. Participates in field clinics, personally administering anesthetics and in teaching field staff anesthetic techniques. Advises field hospitals in selection of anesthetic and inhalation therapy devices and instructs in there use.
4. Confers with the Chief Anesthesiologist in initiating new forms of treatment. Informs staff of new advances in anesthesiology that might be applied at the medical center.
5. Participates in the selection of new and replacement equi! pment in anesthesia, including monitoring and resuscitative te! chniques..
6. Instructs nursing staff in anesthesia related nursing problems and resuscitative techniques.
7. Teaches and improves technique of nurse anesthetists where applicable.
8. Provides consultative services for the physicians as well as for other specialty services within the hospital and for physicians in neighboring hospitals.
9. Willingness to accept equal shares of week/weekend call.
10. Performs other duties as assigned.
QUALIFICATIONS:
1. Graduate of an approved school of anesthesiology who has met state requirements and earned registration by state licensing authorities as an Anesthesiologist, for the State of Alabama.
2. Minimum of 1-2 years.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES
Clinical experience in the administration of anesthesia to insure a professional working knowledge of anesthesia nursing practices and procedures including techniques of physical and emotional asse! ssment, implementation of care and evaluation of results.
Knowledge of professional nursing and of the pharmacological effects of anesthetic drugs.
Ability to administer general anesthetics and to detect unfavorable reactions.
Ability to administer new drugs and manage them once they are in the patient and how to bring the patient out of any side effects that might occur. Skill in preparing reports of results from the use of new drugs.
Frequently new techniques, information and criteria are established from these reports.
Skill in the conduct and management of anesthesia for a broad range of the most complex of surgical procedures (Neurology, General Surgery, Ortho, Oncology, Gyn-Ob, ENT, GU, Thoracic, Eye) etc.
Knowledge of operating room methods, procedures and equipment.
Knowledge of administration and evaluation of actions of new drugs and the evaluation of new anesthetic techniques that may be utilized by o! ther anesthetists.
Knowledge of the complexity with trauma, ski! ll in the conduct and management of anesthesia for the trauma patient.
WORKING CONDITIONS:
Well informed clinical judgment is needed to assign anesthesia risk, and to choose drugs and routes of administration for patients who exhibit large differences in health, physiologic condition, emotional state, size and age. Administration of anesthesia requires knowledge of the effects that different diseases and debilities have in changing patientâs responses to anesthetic drugs and surgical stress. The expectation of an anesthesiologist is to use many finely graded discriminations made rapidly and continuously during the course of anesthesia to modify and improve anesthesia methods, techniques, and drug doses in order to minimize, avert and resolve anesthesia problems.
The work involves a complete range of accepted techniques as well as newer and rarer techniques and procedures peculiar to the unique surgical procedures performed at Providence Hospit! al. It also involves induction, maintenance, and support of life functions during anesthesia, to include intubation procedures. Because of the complex procedures at Providence Hospital, new techniques, information and criteria are established frequently from the reports of results that are rendered by the Nurse Anesthetists.
Frequently complex anesthesia problems presented by patients with rare diseases are handled by anesthetists through telephone consultation with anesthesia authorities at University Centers who provide current concepts gained through research there.
