Job Description:

Under the direction of nursing leadership, the Health Unit Coordinator facilitates unit organization and patient care by assisting in the coordination of patient, nursing, physician, and other health care provider office and clerical activities.

Work Schedule: PRN, 0 hours guaranteed; No Weekends/Holidays

Scope

  • Greets patients/residents/families/community and directs questions, concerns to appropriate person or destination and/or provides assistance. Answers telephone and/or patient call lights promptly and follows through with patient requests.

  • Provides clerical support to unit including making copies, scheduling appointments, distributing mail, and maintaining supplies. Inputs equipment requests and patient charges. Collects unit data and maintains unit statistics and maintains daily patient log sheet

  • Assembles patient charts and maintains charts with appropriate forms, enters physician orders, files reports, assures all forms are in correct order, analyzes medical record for completeness, implements downtime forms as appropriate. Transcribes physician's orders, copies records, relays messages, and prepares, compiles, and maintains various records at the nursing station.

  • Admit patients, administer and maintain patient records, break down medical charts for record keeping and coordinate billing.

  • At discharge, prepares discharge forms as indicated and also prepares current and old medical records for Health Information Department.

  • Assists in stocking supplies in rooms and rounding on patients, as needed.

  • Promotes mission, vision, and values of SCL Health, and abides by service behavior standards.

  • Performs other duties as assigned.

  • May be required to float to other departments (within scope of competency and qualifications) based on business need.

  • May be required to be placed on-call during a regularly scheduled shift.


Minimum Qualifications

  • High school diploma or GED is required

  • Current American Heart Association Basic Life Support for Healthcare Providers (BLS-HCP) certification upon hire or obtained within 60 days of hire with prior approval



Physical Requirements:

  • Ongoing need for employee to see and read information, labels, assess patient needs, operate monitors, identify equipment and supplies.

  • Frequent interactions with patient care providers, patients, and visitors that require employee to verbally communicate as well as hear and understand spoken information, alarms, needs, and issues quickly and accurately, particularly during emergency situations.

  • Manual dexterity of hands and fingers to manipulate complex and delicate equipment with precision and accuracy. This includes frequent computer use and typing for documenting patient care, accessing needed information, medication preparation, etc.

  • Expected to lift and utilize full range of movement to transfer patients. Will also bend to retrieve, lift, and carry supplies and equipment. Typically includes items of varying weights, up to and including heavy items.

  • Need to walk and assist with transporting/ambulating patients and obtaining and distributing supplies and equipment. This includes pushing/pulling gurneys and portable equipment, including heavy items. Often required to navigate crowded and busy rooms (full of equipment, power cords on the floor, etc).

  • May be expected to stand in a stationary position for an extended period of time.

The hourly range for this position is listed below. Actual hourly rate dependent upon experience.

$16.24 - $23.69
