DUTIES:
The Registered Nurse PACU ( Post Anesthesia Care Unit) provides individualized, goal directed patient care to 12-22 patients each day through use of assessment, planning, implementation, and evaluation from admission to discharge from the PACU. Uses Modified Aldrete Scale to assist in initial assessment and to assess level of sedation throughout the recovery period and at discharge from the PACU. Assimilates, interprets, and incorporates essential elements of the perioperative anesthesia report for patient care in the immediate post-operative period. Manages post-operative patient pain by titrating pain medication as ordered by the attending anesthesiologist and evaluates the efficacy of titration.

The PACU ( Post Anesthesia Recovery Unit) is a six bed unit facilitating care of patients from the operating room, ambulatory surgery facility an! d procedural areas. The PACU nurse is under the direct supervision of the Nurse Manager of the Operating Room/PACU.

Shift: Days with flexibility to meet patient care needs.

QUALIFICATIONS REQUIRED:
Citizenship:
Citizen of the United States (Noncitizens may be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens per VA Handbook 5005/2, Chapter 3, Section A, paragraph 3g).

Education:
Graduate of a school of professional nursing approved by the appropriate State-accrediting agency

and

accredited by one of the following accrediting bodies at the time the program was completed by the applicant. The National League for Nursing Accrediting Commission (NLNAC) or The Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education (CCNE). Current, full, active, and unrestricted registration as a graduate! professional nurse in a State, Territory or Commonwealth (i.e., Puerto! Rico) of the United States, or the District of Columbia. In cases of graduates of foreign schools of professional nursing, possession of current, full, active and unrestricted registration will meet the requirement of graduation from an approved school of professional nursing.

Licensure

: Current, full, active, and unrestricted registration as a graduate professional nurse in a State, Territory, or commonwealth (i.e., Puerto Rico) of the United States, or the District of Columbia.

English Language Proficiency:
Must be proficient in spoken and written English.

Physical Standards: Satisfactory physical examination as determined by the Employee Health Unit upon appointment only. Some of the functional requirements are: Heavy lifting 45 pounds and over, heavy carrying over 45 pounds and over, straight pulling 4 hours , reaching above shoulders, walking 8 hours, repeated bending and ability for rapid mental and muscular coor! dination simultaneously. Applicant's education and length of nursing practice (experience) will be considered by a Nurse Professional Standards Board in determining the grade and salary of the applicant selected. Enhanced Qualifications

:

Bachelor of Science in Nursing

One year recent PACU, OR or related clinical experience preferred

One year registered nurse experience in an acute care environment preferred

Excellent interpersonal and communication skills (oral and written)

Demonstrated ability to be dependable, self directed and flexible, including flexibility in assignment and time scheduling

ACLS certification preferred

BLS certification

Professional nursing certification in area of practice preferred
Excellent customer service skills
