The Patient Logistics Representative is responsible for interacting with patients, payers and providers to gather information necessary for accurate registration including assigning of appropriate Medical Record Number (MRN), referral/authorization, and proper clinical bed placement of patients within the Scripps Sites utilizing an electronic bed tracking system. This position effectively manages the registration & unscheduled visit process by: providing accurate MRN and updating registration, gathering medical information and generating accounts appropriate for services to be provided, notifies hospital staff or receiving departments for patients arriving urgently for a procedure or surgery, determines appropriate facility for placement according to plan benefits and contract status, obtains and enters authorization and referral numbers where required for direct admissions, and completes admissions within clinical systems as requested or assigned from various Scripps Sites.
The Patient Logistics Rep effectively manages Patient Admissions by:
- Converting accounts per orders upon admission.
- Utilizing clinical algorithms and patient attributes to evaluate and assign beds for admissions.
- Identifying and negotiating bed placement with Operations Supervisors, physicians and charge nurses within the facilities.
- Communicating and managing bed availability by utilizing escalation protocols for bed cleaning and Management involvement.
- Act as a resource to nurses, doctors, hospital staff and health care facilities.
- Effectively manages acute patient transfers to Scripps and within Scripps.
- Communicates with sending facilities to include physicians, clinical staff, patients, families and ambulance providers.
- Regularly displays a proactive approach to customer service by listening to all parties involved within patient placement and admission, taking ownership of solutions and is able to accurately identify the need to involve leadership in order to resolve concerns.
- Acts as a member of the patient care team by supporting the clinical care staff in the care of the patient.
This is a benefitted Full Time (80 hours bi-weekly), varied shift position located in San Diego.
Required Experience/Specialized Skills:
- Must be able to demonstrate proficiency of computer applications, to include Microsoft word and Excel.
- Knowledge of and experience in hospital registration (all patient types), healthcare insurance carriers, authorization requirements, patient scheduling, JCAHO guidelines, and general billing office policies and procedures.
- Excellent communication and customer service skills.
- Strong organizational and analytical skills; innovative with ability to identify and solve problems.
- Able to adapt, prioritize and meet deadlines.
Preferred Experience/Specialized Skills/Education/Course(s)/Training:
- Knowledge of medical terminology.
- Understanding of DRG's, Medical ICD9/ICD10 codes and CPT/HCPC Codes and Modifiers.
- Previous transfer center or bed placement experience.
- 2 years in an acute hospital environment
