Job Summary
Perform or assists in operating at the job site, including basic maintenance of equipment, handling tools, moving pipe, operating heavy equipment and mixing job materials in a manner to achieve optimal safety, efficiency, quality, reliability, staff morale and teamwork by performing the duties listed in the following section.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
- Learn about basic maintenance of pump rig including mud tanks, mud pumps, draw works, engine and supporting equipment (including crew truck, forklift, trailers, air compressors, test engines, light towers etc) before, during and after shift.
- Leave vehicles, equipment and tools in operable condition. Immediately report all maintenance issues to pump rig operator or superintendent, which includes asking to have broken tools repaired/replaced. Discontinue use of broken items and dispose of broken tools that cannot be repaired.
- Operate vehicles and comply with all Department of Transportation rules and regulations.
- If employee maintain a commercial driver’s license, complete driver vehicle inspection reports before and after operating commercially regulated vehicles. Submit inspection reports after each shift. It is the employee’s responsibility to review weight limits and monitor hours of service for compliance.
- When moving equipment, observe job site and assist as needed to prevent damage and destruction of equipment or property.
- Use handling tools such as tongs and wrenches.
- Store and care for all tools, spare parts, materials and supplies.
- Perform basic housekeeping including but not limited to disposing of garbage and organizing job site, crew truck and employee lockers before, during and after shift.
- Mix drilling fluid, cement and chemicals.
- Operate rig under direct supervision of pump rig operator.
- Follow all safety regulations, policies, principles and procedures.
- Use proper Personal Protective Equipment.
- Immediately notify supervisor about injuries to self or crew members.
- Abide by on-call schedule, which includes all crews in the commercial service department on a rotating basis.
- Must be available by phone and be readily available to report to work as needed at all times.
- Perform other duties as assigned, which may include working in another department as needed.
Requirements
- High School Diploma, GED equivalent or applicable experience
Special Equipment Skills
Ability to develop a working knowledge of basic analytical equipment including:
- selecting the right tool and sized tool for task
- oxy-acetylene cutting torch.
- basic electrical power tools
- ph-indicator strips
- 1 liter Imhoff cones
- Rossum Sand Testers
- viscosity cup
- basic electrical equipment including amp meters and volt meters.
Physical Demands
- Required to stand; walk; sit; climb or balance; and stoop, kneel, crouch, crawl, lift and/or move up to 50 pounds unassisted, and lift and/or move up to 50 pounds.
- Required to use hands and fingers, handle, or feel; reach with hands and arms; talk or hear; taste or smell and lift and/or move up to 100 pounds assisted.
- Close vision, distance vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, ability to distinguish color and ability to adjust focus required.
- This position requires full use of arms and back and is comprised of repetitive motions.
- Stamina is required as employees may work physically demanding shifts of up to or more than 10 hours per shift.

While performing the duties of this position, the employee is frequently exposed to moving mechanical parts at eye level or overhead; toxic or caustic chemicals; risk of electrical shock and vibration; mud; grease; and diesel fuel. The employee is occasionally exposed to fumes or airborne particles, and icy surfaces. The noise level in the work environment is usually loud.
The employee primarily works in an outdoor environment on an elevated platform (ranging from 6’ to 14’ or more above ground level) with extreme heat/cold; direct sunlight; wet and/or humid conditions; and other outside weather conditions.
