Production Designers [Ireland]


 

RTÉ is Ireland’s national public-service media organisation. A leader in Irish media, RTÉ provides comprehensive, cost-effective, free-to-air multi-media services to the public in Ireland and interested audiences internationally.

RTÉ is now seeking applications from exceptionally creative Production Designers to develop and deliver designs for physical and virtual scenery and sets, while ensuring the highest creative standards are achieved within available resources.

Reporting to the Manager of Design, within the Operations division, the key responsibilities include:
  • Taking a brief from programme producers at programme development stage to discuss concepts and production elements so the aspirations for the look and feel of the production are clearly understood.
  • Designing a visual look for both physical and virtual sets and scenery across all productions.
  • Design and generate virtual backgrounds for use in a video wall environment in our LED Studios.
  • Working with the production team throughout a production’s run to meet the programme’s production design requirements.
  • To ensure production design considers all factors associated with effective delivery of the design brief, including design (form and function) and cost efficiency throughout the lifespan of each production.
  • To project manage the set design process from drafting through to installation and use across the series.
  • Overseeing production and design budget of each project.
  • Engaging with outside contractors and overseeing full tendering process from material selection to set build and delivery.
  • Ensuring that Health and Safety requirements are met at all times.
  • Reading scripts for drama production to identify all design requirements and ensure continuity of the visual look of the programme.
The Ideal Candidate
To be successful in this role, you will need outstanding creativity, exceptional organisational ability, and excellent interpersonal skills. With substantial experience of delivering high-quality Production Design in broadcasting, film or theatre, you will strive to ensure that the look and feel of RTÉ’s visual content is inspiring with efficiency at the heart of everything we do. You will have a detailed understanding of the media landscape and an unquenchable curiosity for the world of design.

The successful candidate will possess the following:

  • Creativity – able to invent and deliver an original and innovative aesthetic while marring form and function.
  • Technical ability – ability to expertly use computer aided design software and a working knowledge of other relevant design software for example, Photoshop, Illustrator, 3D modelling and rendering.
  • Planning and organising - able to translate design briefs into stunning designs and manage the delivery across the lifecycle of the project.
  • Communication - able to clearly receive and impart information so that it is understood.
  • Managing relationships - able to build and maintain effective and collaborative working relationships with a range of people.
  • Research skills and analytical ability - able to gather, assess and utilise relevant information.
  • Resilience - manages personal effectiveness in the face of pressure and challenging situations.
  • Flexibility - adapts and works effectively with a variety of situations, individuals or groups. Able to flex one’s style depending on the situation at hand
There are two immediate positions to be filled, 1 x ongoing full-time contract and 1 x temporary full-time fixed purpose 6 month contract.

Both appointments will be made on the Production Designer salary scale from €46,923 to €72,156 gross per annum.

It is also our intention to form a panel from this competition to cover absences and future vacancies which may arise during the 2 year lifetime of the panel.
